FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Thermal cracking in mass concrete is one of the most common, and most preventable, durability risks in dam construction and hydroelectric projects. PCCI's thermal control consulting includes pre-pour thermal analysis, heat-of-hydration modeling, optimized concrete mix design using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) like fly ash and GGBS, and real-time embedded temperature monitoring. PCCI has implemented thermal management programs on dams from 66 MW to 1,200 MW across South Asia, preventing cracking before it starts.

Tell us about your project

Yes. Aggregate-specific mix design optimization is a core PCCI capability. Local aggregate variability is a frequent challenge on infrastructure and hydroelectric projects, especially in remote Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions. PCCI conducts full petrographic analysis, alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR) testing, and performance-based mix proportioning to ensure concrete meets strength, durability, and workability targets using the materials available on-site, without costly imports.

Tell us about your project

PCCI's technical lead authored India's national standard on thermal control of mass concrete (IS:14591) and brings decades of hands-on expertise across landmark hydroelectric programs. With 48+ technical papers published globally, deep knowledge of IS/BIS, ACI, and ASTM standards, and affiliations with ICI, ACCE(I), ISRMTT, and ISCMS, PCCI provides the independent technical credibility that project owners, lenders, and boards require. PCCI serves as Owner's Engineer and independent reviewer on high-value concrete infrastructure, from gravity dams to RCC structures.

Construction delays from concrete quality failures, whether honeycombing, low strength results, alkali-silica reaction, or placement defects, require rapid root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action. PCCI provides on-site troubleshooting and non-destructive testing (NDT) services including rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and core extraction analysis. PCCI diagnoses the issue, identifies the root cause, and delivers corrective specifications, helping projects recover schedules across hydropower, tunneling, and heavy civil infrastructure.

Tell us about your project

Absolutely. Cement optimization is central to both low-carbon concrete engineering and project cost reduction. PCCI uses performance-based mix design with optimized SCM blending ratios (fly ash, GGBS, silica fume, metakaolin) to reduce clinker content by 30 to 50 percent while maintaining or exceeding target strength and 100-year service-life durability. Lower cement means lower COâ‚‚ emissions, lower heat of hydration, and lower material cost, without sacrificing performance. This approach is especially valuable for mass concrete in dams and large infrastructure.

Tell us about your project

Yes. PCCI supports EPC contractors and project developers from feasibility through bid submission with comprehensive pre-tender concrete qualification programs. This includes roller compacted concrete (RCC) trial mixes, aggregate suitability and source evaluation, workability testing (Vebe time, modified Vebe), compressive and tensile strength qualification, and full documentation compliant with IS, ACI, and ASTM standards. PCCI's pre-tender advisory ensures concrete specifications are technically sound, competitively costed, and bid-ready.
